Feed and clothe 1,400 homeless women in DC

Each year, nearly 1,400 homeless and low-income women and families come to N Street Village because they are hungry. We serve nearly 65,000 meals annually and connect 400 women to housing.

Challenge

For over 40 years, N Street Village has provided housing and services for homeless and low-income women and families. We help nearly 1,400 women gain and maintain improvements in housing, health, employment and income. Over 40% of the women we serve have no source of income at entry. Nearly 70% have physical health issues and 86% are managing a mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Many have a history of incarceration and little work history. Sixteen percent are living with HIV.

Solution

This program provides over 64,000 meals to women and children experiencing homelessness. Our menu is not only nutritionally balanced but it also reflects the cultural traditions of the African American community. Our costs average $1.50 per meal. The meals provide a gateway for engagement with our staff. Staff invites each diner to talk and complete a ten minute survey that can qualify them for housing. We also provide assist people to get photo IDs, enroll in benefits and get clothing.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term benefits of this program are to enroll women into the city-wide housing qualification process and to help them gain and maintain improvements in their health, employment and income. Women who engage in our programs achieve outcomes above the national benchmarks. For example, only 70% of women with mental illness placed in housing nationally are expected to remain for a year. However, in the Village, over 95% of the women with mental illness are stably housed a year later.
