Challenge

In many of municipalities in the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca – made up of indigenous peoples with very closed community structures – women are not called upon to elect authorities and are incorporated into spaces of representation only by definition of men, who name them as a municipal councillor for health or hygiene, charges created to reproduce stereotypes and comply with election laws. Espiral trains them in the knowledge and defense of their rights and empowers them to be agents of social change.

Solution

Espiral por la Vida generates training processes in gender and municipal management, to empower women leaders who will occupy government positions in indigenous municipalities of Oaxaca, in strategic alliance with young women from their community, who act as their digital mentors and together are being trained in principles of democratic education, government management with a rights perspective and “digital literacy” and allows them to be recognized as actors of change and women inclusion.

Long-Term Impact

The project trains 20 women from each municipality, who from their situation of exclusion, and many of them in poverty too, can have greater control over their lives by exercising their right to political participation and access to information and justice. Itll impact their entire community by forming support networks with a vision of rights and a gender perspective, strategic alliances with male leaders, tending towards progressivity in women’s political rights and its future consolidation.
